A new month is beginning and that’s a perfect time to check in with yourself and see how your job search is progressing and make any adjustments or modifications to improve your search. Having a good resume is imperative. Getting your name out there, hopefully through networking, is important. Knowing what you will say on a phone screen can get you that all important interview. Anticipating the questions that will be asked of you and giving strong answers will help you ace the interview. All of these aspects of a job search are what makes it successful. But there is one factor that will help you to overcome any problems, obstacles, mistakes, time constraints or otherwise challenges. That intangible is motivation.
Motivation is the reason or purpose for doing something. Your reason or motivation for your job search is probably one of the following: 1) supporting yourself or family 2) becoming independent 3) accumulating enough cash for a specific purchase or pay some bills or 4) just wanting to work. Motivation should be the driving force for you to meet your goal. Perseverance is the fuel that drives your motivation.
Perseverance is defined by Dictionary.com as steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. In other words, keep on keeping on. Perseverance is the driving force behind any successful, long, protracted job search. You keep getting back up, no matter how many times that you get knocked down. But there is also a key to getting up. You must learn something from every “knock down” experience. Otherwise, the same behavior may repetitiously keep sending you to the canvas.
Make adjustments to your resume if you are not getting any results or requests for phone screens. Tell everyone that you know that you are searching for an opportunity (as the more people who know increases the odds in your favor). Know what information you will give on a phone screen and never let a phone screen catch you off guard or unprepared to answer questions. If you are asked for an interview, research the company. Prepare questions to ask. Practice a mock interview with a friend. Look the part. Go into the interview prepared and confident.
Continue to do these things. Learn from your mistakes and make adjustments. Getting a job is basically preparation meeting opportunity. Be prepared and look for opportunities. Look for opportunities every single day. You will be successful in your job search if you do these things.
