When you are beginning any job search, if you are currently employed or unemployed, your mindset or personal attitude plays a key role in your actions. If you THINK that you will be successful, you probably will be. But your thinking is of paramount importance. Being successful starts with your thinking, but it also includes taking the right steps in collaboration with your thinking.
Briefly, the right steps are:
1) Commitment: going all in in your decision to look for employment.
2) Preparation: having your resume ready to send.
3) Accuracy: only sending your resumes to those jobs for which you are qualified.
4) Consistency: sending out your resume EVERY DAY until a job offer is presented to you.
5) More preparation: researching companies and brushing up on interviewing techniques.
But having the proper attitude brings these steps into focus and having the right mindset also aids you in completing these steps precisely, which also helps determine your attitude. If you perform any of these steps poorly, you will experience a mountain of resistance, which will shake your mindset. Both go hand in hand.
For example, if you send out resumes to companies that ask for specific qualifications that you don’t have, be prepared to encounter heavy rejection or maybe even not hear from that company at all. When I was a recruiter in engineering, I used to receive all kinds of resumes. Once I received a resume of a sandwich maker at Subway in response to an ad that I had run for a project manager in construction. I couldn’t believe that someone so blatantly unqualified for a position would apply. I decided to call him to get his logic and reasoning. He told me that he knew that he was not qualified, but had a “hunch” that we might have something that he would be qualified for. We didn’t.
He had wasted his time (and mine). Your time is much too valuable to waste by sending resumes to places that you are not qualified to work. Hint: if you don’t have the education required for a company’s opening, don’t even bother to send your resume there because companies NEVER stretch on education. However, if you only have 3 years of experience and the company wants 5 years, ALWAYS send in your resume because companies stretch on experience all the time.
By attacking your job search with a positive mindset and taking the proper steps, you will have much less negative feedback and will eventually land a job. It’s a matter of when, not if.
