“How can I go forward when I don’t know which way I’m facing?” John Lennon wrote those words for the song How from his Imagine album back in 1971 and the words pose a formidable question regarding direction.
In yesterday’s post, Looking for the Right One, I discussed how candidates needed to look for the right job and that companies are constantly looking for the right candidates to fill the jobs. An important and crucial factor in finding the right one is the direction that you will be going. In order to move forward, you need to know where you currently are.
Once you have figured out where you are, you can start taking incremental steps in reaching your ultimate goal. For job seekers, that goal is finding the job of their dreams. For companies, that goal is finding the employee of their dreams.
The incremental steps are a combination of drafting a proper resume, getting the type of exposure needed to land a new job and understanding and implementing tried and proven interviewing techniques. The interviewing portion is the trickiest of all because no two people interview precisely the same. Therefore, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to interviewing.
Figuring out where you are seems like it would be an easy task and for the unemployed, it is. But for others who don’t really examine where they are, where they are going could be to take a step in the wrong direction and even travel some distance. Knowing where you are relative to employment means to evaluate and assess your current job. Do you like the people with which you work? Do you have a lengthy commute? Is the pay adequate? For those individuals who are working, review your current job carefully before trying to make a change because if you don’t, you could end up going in the wrong direction, from the frying pan and into the fire.
