Employment

Finding the right employment brings personal satisfaction, gratification, and peace of mind. While many people are happy with their jobs, an article in Forbes Magazine a few years back indicated that 52% of Americans were unhappy at work. Considering the size of the work force, that’s a lot of people.

How can it be that so many people dislike their jobs? The reasons are many: 1) poor work/life balance 2) less than amiable co-workers 3) a boss who takes all the credit 4) a boss who is less than kind or generous or 5) a boss who micro manages. I have worked in all those circumstances in my considerable career.

Everyone is given 168 hours a week, no more, no less. For many, here is the breakdown: 56 hours of sleep a week and 40 hours of work a week, which leaves us with 72 hours a week to: get cleaned up to work, commute to work, spend with the family or our significant other, dine for 21 meals, chores, and leisure. When you look at life that way, sleep and work comprise a huge part of our life. That’s why having the correct employment is essential.

Life is far too short to be laboring at a task that you dislike or for a tyrant. If you are stuck in that kind of circumstance, the word here is to PLAN YOUR WAY OUT. Planning your way out consists of several steps:

1) You may really hate your job, but if you have a job, give thanks for that because it is always easier to find different employment when you have a job.

2) Once you have decided to leave your current job, never settle. You already have a crummy job, so hold out for something that you really want.

3) Decide what it is that you want to do and start making plans to do it.

a. Refresh and update your resume.
b. Brush up on your research skills because you will want to research companies.
c. Be sure that your Linked-In Profile matches your resume with no discrepancies.
d. Review your interviewing techniques.
e. Apply for a minimum of 1 job per day for 30 consecutive days where you meet all the requirements, especially education.

Work your plan. Above all, be patient. Regardless of what happens, do not give up. If you have a job, it may not be ideal, but at least you still have funds coming in. Think about the difficulty and stress of unpaid bills while looking for employment. In that situation, you might have to settle.
