Of all the blog posts that I have written over the years about employment related matters, the next several posts will probably be the most important.
Employment is important. All have bills to pay to keep on living. Some of have families, loved ones, or friends to support. The first goal should be to keep as much money coming in as possible to do this. But secondary goals include enjoying the work that you do, enjoying the place in which you work, enjoying your colleagues, work / life balance, and job security. And some would argue (and would have a valid point) that these are not secondary goals, but just as important as compensation.
If compensation becomes your most important reason for working, the statement “employment is important” should be amended to read that money is important. Obviously, money is important, but is it as important as the value that we assign to it? If you do not have money or not enough money, then money can become all consuming. But even if you have plenty of money, money can still become all consuming. The world is filled with people who are prisoners of their possessions, prisoners of their money. The ironic part of that thought is that money or possessions can become worthless or taken away in an instant. When the stock market tanks or corrects, billionaires and millionaires usually lose a ton of value, even if it is only on paper.
If employment or money is important, where does it fit in the priorities of life? Every thought and action of your life can be categorized into six areas:
1) Spiritual
2) Financial
3) Mental
4) Physical
5) Social
6) Family
Areas like politics fall under mental, economic fall financial, weight or health fall under physical, friendships fall under social, marriage /divorce and birth come under family. Employment falls under financial.
My experience with life is that whenever there is an issue, objection, obstacle, challenge or problem in any of the areas 2 through 6, the root of the difficulty can usually be traced to something not quite being in sync with the spiritual area of life. This typically means that wrongs in areas 2 through 6 are symptoms, and the problem is not having a spiritual life where it should be. I have found that when I have everything right with my spiritual life, most of the “symptoms” in my life’s other areas tend to work out for the better. Tomorrow we shall visit the complications that can arise from not having your spiritual life in order.
