Looking for the Right One

Back in the 1970s, Stephen Bishop wrote a song entitled Looking for the Right One and the song appeared on Art Garfunkel’s Breakaway album.  Though the song was a love song, its meaning can have significance in your job search.

As a candidate for employment, you are looking for the right one when it comes to companies or jobs.  Perhaps some of you are just looking for anyone or anything as opposed to the right one.  At some time in our lives, I think most people experience that desperation.

As a company, employers are also searching, looking for the right one, meaning the right person to fill the job.  Obviously, the key is to make yourself as attractive a candidate that employers will want to interview you and hire you.

Unemployment numbers aside, companies are still hiring people, just not as many and the ones who are hiring are being more specific and discerning.  This means that now more than ever you need every advantage that you can get in order to be one of the chosen candidates.  Every advantage basically means:

A pristine resume (no grammatical errors or spelling errors)

A game plan (understanding and deciding what approach you are going to take)

Executing your game plan

If you can do this, you can be successful in your job search.  More time and effort may be needed on your part than at any other time in your life because of the economic circumstances, as well as a fresh approach as the employment marketplace is constantly changing.

Having concern about your employment situation is natural.  You need employment to live, to care and provide for your family or even just for personal fulfillment.  Try not letting concern devolve into worry.

Matthew 6: 25-34
