General Interviewing Tips

Show Up on Time

Be on time for your interview, just a few minutes early if possible.  Obviously, you never want to be late, but you also do not want to be too early.  Respect their time.

Wear a Suit

Regardless of the company culture, wear a suit.  You are not part of their culture…yet.  If you fail to make a good first impression, the odds are that you won’t be around for a second one.

Research the Company

Knowing about the company that has granted you an interview is an important step.  You want to come across as informed in the interview.

Smile

Always smile.  A smile attracts people.  If all things are equal, smiling usually will give you an edge as a smile implies friendliness and approachability.  Too many people do not smile.

Show Kindness with Your Words

Kindness also attracts people.  You want to build a relationship as fast as possible.  This will make you harder to turn down.

Listen

If the interviewer likes to talk, listen, and without interruption.  Many times an interviewer will reveal information that will help you answer other questions based on what they say.

Look Them in the Eye, Directly

Don’t be shy.  You are interviewing because they liked something about you.  You have the position of strength.

Watch Your Posture

Do not slouch.  Lean in to the interview just slightly.

Handshake

Give your interviewer a hearty handshake and let them know that you are ready.

Ask Questions

Show interest in the company.

Ask a Closing Question

My favorite one is “what is the next stop in the process?”
